Cultured Pearls of Service

Our Foundation

The Cultured Pearls of Service, Incorporated is the charitable arm of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Rho Xi Omega Chapter. It is a Maryland nonprofit recognized by the Internal Revenue Service as a 501(c)(3) organization.

The Cultured Pearls of Service Incorporated was established under the name of Rho Xi Omega Charities, Incorporated, in August 1990. The outstanding women, who were the incorporators, were Bonita Dancy, Bobbie Daniel, C. Yvonne Holt-Stone, Delores Kelley, Donna Price and Patricia Roberts.

These ladies were all members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Rho Xi Omega Chapter and they had the foresight to see that Rho Xi Omega Chapter could make an even greater contribution to residents, if we were able to raise funds through a tax-exempt nonprofit organization. Therefore, this corporation was organized exclusively for educational and charitable purposes, all for the public welfare. The purposes included, but were not limited to, distributions to organizations that qualify as tax-exempt organizations.

Under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code, and more specifically, to receive and administer funds for charitable and educational purposes.

Historically, our strategy has been to provide a comprehensive and systemic program and services that will improve the educational growth, health, cultural and socio-economic status of youth and families, who reside in Baltimore. Ne’er have these needs been greater than today! We have provided much needed services to the residents of Baltimore, by filling educational and social gaps created by a changing economic environment.

Juanita Tynes Tillery
Cultured Pearls of Service, Incorporated President

On behalf of the Officers and Directors of the Cultured Pearls of Service, Inc., I thank you for visiting our webpage. Since we were incorporated in 1990, Cultured Pearls of Service have raised funds by sponsoring public events and activities and by applying for and receiving grants. All proceeds are used to fund the many and varied service programs of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc., Rho Xi Omega Chapter and we award scholarships to deserving Baltimore high-school graduates, annually. Additionally, we offer a 4-week summer S.T.E.A.M. Camp for middle-school students, Camp Font-Tastic. Camp Font-Tastic is held on the beautiful campus of Coppin University. During camp, the campers learn a multiplicity of skills in the areas of science, technology, engineering, art and math. Not only do they have fun applying the new skills during the summer, they can use these skills when they return to their schools each fall.

Programs of Service have been the heartbeat of Alpha Kappa Alpha, since its inception in 1908. Please view the Rho Xi Omega Calendar for the many service opportunities you can participate in.
We take our service to the community very seriously, and our love for the community is evident in the work we do. We seek to meet the needs of our fellow citizens on many different levels. We have an annual program budget of over $40,000 and we continue to give more than that as the needs of the communities increase in these difficult economic times. Our budget is funded by grants and event fundraisers that are open to the public.

If you are interested in donating to our foundation to benefit Rho Xi Omega’s community service programs, we ask that your checks be written to, Cultured Pearls of Service and mailed to, Cultured Pearls of Service, 1498 Reisterstown Road, #271, Pikesville, Maryland 21208.

The CPS Board meets on the first Monday monthly, from September-June at 6:30pm. Please email, Juanita Tynes Tillery, current president, for more information about us and/or to suggest funding sources. Thank you for supporting us as we shall continue to ‘serve all mankind.’

Thank you for your generous support.

The chapter is especially proud of its educational programs, such as the award-winning 2014-2018 A.S.C.E.N.D. program for high school young women and young men; the ON TRACK program (1999 – 2002); The Ivy Reading AKAdemy (2003 – 2006) and our signature program: Camp Font-Tastic, which has been in existence for over 25 years.
